A cellular outage has swept across large portions of the US, causing disruptions in services provided by major telecom companies including AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile.

Data collected from outage tracking website Downdetector revealed that more than 32,000 incidents were reported with AT&T’s service around 4:30am Eastern Time. The outage affected cities including San Francisco, Houston, and Chicago, according to information displayed on the website.

Users of various other telecom providers, including Verizon, T-Mobile, UScellular, Cricket Wireless, and Boost Mobile, also encountered issues with their services.

Amid the chaos, the San Francisco Fire Department took to social media platform X to highlight the impact of the outage on emergency services. They mentioned that the disruption was hindering individuals’ ability to reach 911, a critical lifeline during emergencies.

In response, the fire department assured the public that they were actively addressing the situation and closely monitoring developments to mitigate the effects of the outage.

The widespread nature of the cellular outage raises concerns about the reliability of telecommunications infrastructure and its resilience in the face of unexpected disruptions. As affected users grapple with the inconvenience caused by the outage, telecom companies are likely to face scrutiny regarding the robustness of their networks and contingency plans during such events.

Questions arise about the root cause of the outage and the steps being taken by telecom companies to prevent similar incidents in the future. Additionally, concerns persist regarding the adequacy of emergency response protocols and alternative communication channels during periods of service disruption.
