Virgin Media O2 and Cellnex have partnered with Bristol City Council to boost connectivity in the city using lamppost-mounted small cells.

Cellnex has started installing small cells on existing infrastructure like lampposts. Facilitated by Virgin Media O2, the small cells promise to not only enhance mobile connectivity and capacity, but also to support digital inclusion across Bristol.

The partnership with Bristol City Council is part of a broader initiative to deliver high-quality connectivity over 25 designated sites within the city. 12 sites are already operational, with the remaining locations set to go live in the coming weeks.

Councillor Tony Dyer, Leader of Bristol City Council, said: “It’s exciting to see how we can enhance connectivity across Bristol for our residents and businesses. It is incredibly important for us to ensure they receive the support they need both now and in the future.

“This partnership is a vital component of our wider strategy to prioritise high-quality digital access city-wide to support our vibrant and innovative community.”

The importance of small cells in the advancement of mobile infrastructure within the UK cannot be overstated. These compact units are recognised for their ability to boost connectivity and coverage in specific local areas.

Deploying small cells on existing structures like lampposts is faster, more economical, less disruptive, and ensures a more reliable connection, particularly in urban zones where the demand for high-bandwidth services often outpaces supply. The Bristol initiative is part of a broader rollout, comprising over 1,200 small cells that Cellnex has deployed across the UK.

The deployment of new small cells in Bristol is more than just a technical upgrade; it represents a fundamental shift in how city-wide connectivity can be improved using smart, efficient solutions. By leveraging existing infrastructure, this initiative not only caters to current demands but also anticipates future connectivity needs as Bristol continues to grow and evolve.
