SK Telecom reports it managed to achieve high download speeds in the final phase of its 5G tests using a Samsung Galaxy S10.
As part of a partnership between the South Korean companies, the duo reached a download speed of 2.7Gbps. SK Telecom noted a 2GB movie can be downloaded within six seconds at these speeds.
The test was conducted over SK Telekom's 3.5GHz spectrum and also used Samsung's virtual core which supports 4G and 5G simultaneously.
A spokesperson for Samsung said:
"This success is part of an ongoing collaboration between SK Telecom and Samsung of many years.
Pushing forward early 5G commercialization, the companies have succeeded in the world’s first 4G and 5G interworking back in 2017 (Link) and world’s first 5G Next-Generation Core (5G NC) trial in June 2018 (Link), which featured control and user planes separation and VNFs implementation based on 3GPP release 15 standards."
The ‘Galaxy’ line of smartphones are some of the world’s most popular; which makes them a good example of what users can expect. Of course, once launched, 5G networks will be under a lot more strain than in current test conditions.
South Korea is expected to be among the first countries to rollout 5G networks at scale. The first commercial networks are set to launch next month following a short delay arising from problems getting compatible devices into stores.
A limited selection of 5G devices have been announced, but more are set to be released throughout the year. Huawei is expected to debut a 5G version of its upcoming P30 during an event later this month.
