Despite pre-event rumours suggesting otherwise, the Huawei P30 Pro is not shipping with 5G support.

Telecoms was in attendance at Huawei's latest handset launch. Huawei began its conference discussing its prowess in not just smartphones, but also in telecoms infrastructure.

Perhaps it was just us, but it felt like a build-up to announcing it would be using that expertise to be among the first to ship a 5G smartphone. Alas, that was not the case.

We shouldn't be surprised, the ‘P’ series from Huawei focuses more on its camera innovations than anything else. However, the inevitable Mate 30 will almost certainly ship with 5G support later this year.

"We are considering to put 5G on the next Mate series," said Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei Consumer Business, speaking to CNET. "This autumn we'll be ready for it on the Mate series."

Certainly in Europe, there's little rush to ship a 5G smartphone. Supporting networks are only just starting to come online and it will be some time before they're widespread even post-Mate 30 launch.

"In the European market, 5G will be mainly for next year I guess,” Yu commented.

Huawei has technically announced its first 5G smartphone in the Mate X foldable, though it's yet to have a release date and will require most people to take out a small mortgage with a price starting at $2,600.

Samsung, name-dropped throughout Huawei's conference, has announced a 5G version of its Galaxy S10. While Huawei's decision is understandable, Samsung has made it feel like a missed opportunity for Huawei to flex its telecoms muscle.

We'll almost certainly be at the Mate 30 launch ready to put its 5G support to the test.
