Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT) will use Amazon’s Project Kuiper to improve satellite connectivity options in Japan.

NTT plans to distribute Project Kuiper connectivity services to enterprises and government organisations across the country. NTT Group companies will also become customers of Project Kuiper, facilitating a seamless integration of innovative LEO satellite connectivity into their communication networks.

Katsuhiko Kawazoe, Senior Executive Vice President of NTT, said: “We look forward to accelerating innovation and achieving a future in which we deliver further value in cooperation with Project Kuiper, bringing together the respective technologies and resources of each company, such as NTT’s IOWN technology.”

Japan, despite its technological advancements in terrestrial communications like fibre and wireless, faces challenges in restoring connectivity in challenging terrains and islands during emergencies. Project Kuiper’s LEO satellite connectivity provides a swift and scalable solution to this predicament.

Japanese businesses will be able to embrace Project Kuiper’s connectivity for various applications, including the IoT, predictive maintenance, fleet management, and remote manufacturing. Additionally, customers can harness Project Kuiper to connect to Amazon Web Services (AWS) for advanced technologies like machine learning and AI.

Looking ahead, NTT and Project Kuiper plan to explore further collaborations—focusing on seamless communication between Earth and space. The emphasis is on creating innovative services that support sustainable resource use and provide consumers with enhanced options for healthcare, financial services, and entertainment.

Rajeev Badyal, VP of Technology and Head of Project Kuiper, commented: “NTT is a trusted communications services provider in Japan and an ideal partner for Project Kuiper as we prepare to offer reliable, secure LEO broadband services in the country.”

With the recent success of Project Kuiper’s prototype satellite test mission, the future of LEO satellite broadband services looks promising. Beta testing of services is slated to commence in the second half of 2024, marking a significant milestone in the collaboration between NTT and Project Kuiper.
