Samsung and Keysight have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to advance the research and development of 6G technology.
While 5G has plenty of life yet, it’s never too soon to start preparing for what comes next. The MoU signed between Samsung and Keysight aims to do just that.
Sunghyun Choi, Executive Vice President at Samsung Research, said:
“The signing of this MoU with Keysight will greatly advance Samsung’s 6G strategy of combining the company’s expertise in communication technology with capabilities in software and AI.
Joining forces with Keysight enables Samsung to influence a future that uses 6G to improve human connection, health, and safety.”
6G is expected to harness technologies including artificial intelligence, sensing, digital twins, time-sensitive networking, and holographic communications
The next-generation network is also expected to provide ubiquitous coverage from undersea all the way up to orbit via a Space-Air-Ground-Sea Integrated Network (SAGSIN). To achieve such a feat, partnerships like the one between Samsung and Keysight will be critical.
One of the initial focuses of the partnership will be to accelerate the development of AI-enabled air interfaces that leverage massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) antenna technology. Such air interfaces will support ultra-dense networks that can deliver ultra-low latencies and terabit data wireless transmissions.
Giampaolo Tardioli, VP of Keysight’s network infrastructure business, commented:
“Keysight is pleased to expand its existing collaboration with Samsung, which has resulted in several important achievements towards establishing 5G new radio (NR) as a mature technology.
6G is expected to underpin the wireless connectivity fabric that leverages heterogeneous networks and the convergence of communication and computing.
Establishing a 6G partnership with Samsung enables Keysight to refine our software-driven test solutions, critical in developing differentiated 6G products.”
Samsung and Keysight have long enjoyed a fruitful relationship. For example, Samsung selected Keysight’s 5G network emulation solutions last year to successfully demonstrate a data link based on 3GPP Rel-16 specifications for the 5G New Radio (NR) standard.
Keysight boasts “foundational technology and key building blocks essential to helping 6G become a reality” including network, channel, and user equipment (UE) emulation, mmWave and sub-Terahertz (THz) signal source and analysis, as well as high-speed Ethernet network emulation and data centre connectivity testing.
As the 5G rollout progresses and attention gradually shifts towards 6G, Samsung and Keysight are sure to increasingly appreciate their partnership.
