AT&T is providing G.fast connectivity to properties without access to fibre. The American telecom giant has deployed its G.fast services in eight metro areas, along with 14 additional cities selling the service to MDUs.
G.fast provides internet access to apartment and condo units over existing coaxial cables, delivering speed up to 500 Mbps. Moreover, it minimises disruption for current residents as there is no need to place new wiring in every home.
The eight areas are: Boston, Denver, Minneapolis, New York City, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Seattle, and Tampa. While the 14 other metro cities include: Albany, N.Y., Baltimore, Buffalo, N.Y., Cincinnati, Colorado Springs, Colo., Hartford, Conn., Omaha, Neb., Pittsburgh, Portland, Ore., Providence, R.I., Richmond, Va., Rochester, N.Y., Washington, D.C., and Salt Lake City.
Each of these areas is located outside AT&T’s traditional 21-state home internet service area. It will offer internet speeds of up to 500 megabits per second, but G.fast provides the capability to allow AT&T to offer greater speeds over time. Residents of these properties can also enjoy the availability of DIRECTV without installing a dish at their individual units.
Ed Balcerzak, senior vice president, AT&T Connected Communities, said: “While fibre to the unit remains the best broadband solution for most properties where possible, G.fast and fixed millimetre-wave provide connectivity to properties that aren’t able to support fibre. AT&T is committed to providing apartments and condos with connectivity across the nation, and innovations such as G.fast are helping us to do that.”
Alongside the aforementioned locations, AT&T has also launched its ultra-fast internet service in 2 new metro areas – Biloxi-Gulfport, Miss. and Savannah Ga. It now markets its 100% fibre network powered by AT&T Fiber to over 5.5 million locations across 57 metros. Out of these locations, over 2 million subscribers choose internet service from AT&T.
