Qualcomm has taken the opportunity of its 5G Summit to make a plethora of announcements around next-generation architectures and partnerships.

The company announced that it is developing its first cellular chip optimised and certified for Microsoft’s Azure Sphere IoT operating system. The chipset will be preconfigured with the Azure Sphere platform, comprise of hardware-level security, and will automatically connect to Azure Sphere security cloud services.

Galen Hunt, engineer and managing director, Microsoft Azure Sphere, said: “For IoT innovations to be reliable, they must be built on a foundation of security. Qualcomm Technologies will allow partners to innovate with the assurance that their products, customers, and brands are secured. The new IoT chipset will light up a broad set of new scenarios at the outer edge—even the most resource-constrained ones.

“Together with the silicon innovation and cellular and embedded security expertise Qualcomm Technologies brings, our partners will have the freedom to securely connect devices anytime, anywhere.”

In another announcement, Qualcomm revealed a new reference design for 5G-based fixed wireless access (FWA) home gateways. The reference design is an all-inclusive turnkey service that integrates the company’s latest connectivity offerings, including the second-generation Qualcomm Snapdragon X55 5G Modem-RF System and the Qualcomm Networking Pro 1200 platform for high performance, Wi-Fi 6 connectivity, along with other advanced gateway capabilities and features.

The design will help broadband carriers, ISPs, and OEMs. These consumers will be able to rapidly develop and deploy all-wireless home internet solutions with the company’s latest 5G cellular and Wi-Fi 6 home networking technologies, transforming the traditional home broadband industry with multi-gigabit, plug-and-play alternatives to DSL, cable, and fibre.

The California-based semiconductor and telecom tech giant also announced that its new Snapdragon X55 5G Modem-RF System has been chosen by over 30 global OEMs for commercial 5G FWA customer-premises equipment (CPE) devices. The Snapdragon X55 5G Modem-RF System streamlines product development for multiple mobile broadband product categories, such as the sub-6 GHz, mmWave, and extended-range mmWave CPE devices. The system empowers OEMs to tackle wireless complexity while assisting them to offer a diverse product portfolio to their customers.
