Qualcomm Technologies and Swisscom, a Switzerland-based telecommunications provider, along with other well-known device manufacturers like LG, Askey, OPPO and WNC have announced the arrival of 5G services in Europe with the launch of Swisscom’s 5G network. The launch marks the beginning of a quick roll out of 5G networks and Android smartphones in the European region by the end of 2019.
Enrico Salvatori, senior vice president and president, Qualcomm Europe/MEA, QUALCOMM Europe said: “Qualcomm Technologies is proud to support Swisscom on the launch of the first commercial 5G network in Europe. This milestone is testament to the strong collaboration that took place across the ecosystem to accelerate 5G commercialisation by one year, allowing for the arrival new and exciting user experiences – and Qualcomm Technologies is at the heart of all of this.
“5G is now here in Europe, ready to fundamentally enrich how we live our lives,” Salvatori added.
In September Swisscom, along with Ericsson, announced the completion of what was described as Europe’s first end-to-end, multi-vendor 5G NR call in Burgdorf, Switzerland. According to both firms, the call was made over Swisscom’s 3GPP-compliant network by making use of Ericsson’s radio technology, alongside the Ericsson Cloud Packet Core. Fredrik Jejdling, executive vice president and head of business area networks at Ericsson said: “By achieving an end-to-end data call on the 3.5GHz band and kick-starting the 5G network rollout, we are helping Swisscom bring 5G services quicker to its customers. Access to new technologies will prepare industries for 5G use cases that will benefit the whole of Switzerland.”
Qualcomm announced the launch of new Snapdragon chips for both high and mid-tier devices earlier this week. The launch means there are now two new chips in the 7-series – the Snapdragon 730 and 730G – along with one in the 6-series, the Snapdragon 665. Kedar Kondap, the vice president of product management at Qualcomm, said: “With the introduction of the Snapdragon 730, 730G and 665 Mobile Platforms, we are bringing features such as sophisticated AI, exceptional gaming and advanced camera capabilities to a broad spectrum of devices at exceptional performance.”
