Nokia, OMRON, and NTT DOCOMO have come together to jointly conduct field trials at their individual facilities using 5G technology to address some of the biggest challenges faced by manufacturers today.
The testing, which will be carried out by NTT DOCOMO, will cater to the rising demand for wireless communications at manufacturing sites – mainly driven by the need for stable connectivity between IoT devices. Usually, the background noise machines and movement of workers in factories have potential to interfere with wireless signals. This problem will be solved in verifying the reliability and stability of 5G technology deployed by conducting radio wave measurements and transmission experiments.
OMRON would be providing factory automation equipment and Nokia will enable 5G technology for this trial. The aim of these partners is to build the foundation for the feasibility of the concept of a layout-free production line with Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs), which will automatically convey components to the exact spot where they are required based on communication with production line equipment.
In June, this publication reported on a collaboration between Nokia, Ericsson, and SK Telecom over 6G research. It is said that this partnership between two of the leading telecoms equipment manufacturers and an innovative operator is something worth to keep an eye on. In addition to 6G, the partners will also research Ultra Reliable and Low Latency (URLLC), Distributed Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO), AI in networks, 28GHz band and 5G Stand-Alone (SA) networks to apply on commercial networks.
