Nokia is expanding its IoT portfolio and analytics capabilities by acquiring San Mateo, California-based SpaceTime Insight, which will help expedite Nokia’s development of new IoT applications for key vertical markets.
With offices in the US, Canada, UK, India and Japan, SpaceTime Insight offers machine learning-powered analytics and IoT applications for some of the world’s largest transportation, energy and utilities organisations, such as Entergy, FedEx, NextEra Energy, Singapore Power and Union Pacific Railroad. Its machine learning models and other advanced analytics are specially designed for asset-intensive industries that predict asset health with precision, by optimising related operations.
SpaceTime Insight and its CEO Rob Schilling will join the IoT product unit within the Nokia Software business group.
In addition, the Finnish telecom company has successfully completed a 5G call by using the 3GPP-compliant 5G New Radio (NR) system over-the-air on the 3.5GHz frequency band. The task was conducted jointly with SFR at the Nokia 5G Test Network and Competence Centre in Paris-Saclay, France.
Along with the Nokia 5G NR technology, the test also included the Nokia 5G-ready AirScale radio platform and Cloud RAN technology together with 3GPP-compliant end user test devices.
A cloud infrastructure based on the Nokia AirFrame data centre solution was built to support Cloud RAN.
The Nokia AirFrame open edge server is designed for deployment at extant base station sites by keeping a strict focus on its size: 133.5 x 444 x 430mm (HWD). The server goes well with a real-time, Open Platform for NFV (OPNFV)-compatible, OpenStack-distribution created to function in small data centres while delivering performance and low latency demanded by the edge environment.
The server supports a wide variety of 5G applications and enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) services.
According to a company press release, the AirFrame open edge cloud infrastructure has been formulated to address “stringent and diverse low-latency data processing demands of Cloud RAN and advanced applications for consumers and industries.
The company will start shipping the AirFrame Open Edge server during Q3/2018.
