Gartner believes worldwide 5G wireless network infrastructure revenue will double between 2019 and 2020.

The market researcher has predicted that the global 5G network infrastructure revenue will reach £3.43 billion in 2020, which is an 89% increase from £1.8bn in 2019.

According to Gartner, investments in 5G NR network infrastructure will account for 6% of the total wireless infrastructure revenue of communications service providers (CSPs) in 2019, and that this figure will reach 12% in 2020.

Sylvain Fabre, senior research director, said: “5G wireless network infrastructure revenue will nearly double between 2019 and 2020. For 5G deployments in 2019, CSPs are using non-stand-alone technology. This enables them to introduce 5G services that run more quickly, as 5G New Radio (NR) equipment can be rolled out alongside existing 4G core network infrastructures.”

In 2020, CSPs will roll out standalone 5G technology that will require 5G NR equipment and a 5G core network, which will reduce costs for CSPs and improve performance for users.

Information Services Group (ISG) earlier this month suggested in a report that enterprises in the Nordic region consider the deployment of 5G mobile services as a catalyst for the proliferation of IoT solutions. ISG sees the IoT trend advancing in the Nordic nations as it is being set out or tested in the sectors, such as healthcare, manufacturing, smart buildings, and connected vehicles.
