LiFi solutions manufacturer Firefly LiFi is utilising LED technology to introduce low cost 5G wireless bridges to smart city networks offering the best security and high data capacity for indoor and Wireless To The Home (WTTH) outdoor backhaul applications.

Firefly LiFi, which is already shipping light fidelity products for indoor applications, for the first time is formulating this new wireless bridge solution for longer range outdoor as well as indoor point-to-point applications. Firefly LiFi has designed the license free solution for lightpole-to-lightpole or building-to-building backhaul of 5G LTE, LiFi, and IP security camera backhaul. The solution uses light spectrum instead of radio frequency (RF) technology to carry data.

The solutions can be deployed on school, college or university campuses, connecting buildings, and can be used in factories, airports, warehouses and stadiums to name a few. It is unsusceptible to RF interference, much more secure than RF/WiFi backhaul solutions and prevents RF congestion in Metropolitan Area Networks.

Elsewhere, Ericsson, Intel and Telstra have come together to demonstrate the world’s first esports gaming experiences over 5G. To power the demonstration at Telstra’s 5G Innovation Centre on the Gold Coast, the companies used the mmWave wireless connectivity enabled via Intel’s development platform 5G Mobile Trial Platform and Ericsson’s 5G base station and core network on Dell Alienware laptops/PCs. Professional Australian gamers The Chiefs were recorder as the world’s first eSports teams to experience gaming over 5G.

Emilio Romeo, Australia and New Zealand MD of Ericsson said: “We’ve partnered with Telstra and Intel to deliver esports professionals an unrivalled gaming experience with 5G, allowing them to play in a mobile setting while having the low latency they can only get today from a wireline network. This demonstration is another example of how 5G’s low latency and high throughput can be used across various industries, providing greater efficiency and mobility.”
