CUJO AI’s latest cybersecurity report states that over two-thirds of home networks are targeted by online threats every month.

The cybersecurity firm uses AI-powered software to protect networks. CUJO AI bases its annual reports on anonymised data from the 1.8 billion real-world devices that it defends.

Between 1 May 2002 and 1 November 2022, CUJO says it blocked over two billion threats. The average number of blocked threats swelled to 8,000 per minute.

Alarmingly, 67 percent of home networks were exposed to at least one threat per month.

“Cybercriminals are finding new ways to victimise home users,” says Leonardas Marozas, Head of CUJO AI Security Research Lab.

56 percent of internet users attempt to open at least one phishing link every month—putting their finances and sensitive information at risk. In October alone, COJU AI boasts it successfully blocked 66,801,679 attempts.

Over weekends, CUJO AI says it records an up to 400 percent increase in adware activity. However, it has also seen a general increase in adware throughout the week.

Botnets are still seeking out notoriously vulnerable IoT devices to add to their legions of compromised devices. CUJO AI notes “the number of end-of-life, unsupported devices is growing, creating more risk to home networks.”

Last month, Arlo was criticised for its new end-of-life policy which pulls support for several of its connected security cameras over a relatively short period.

As a large and trusted manufacturer, Arlo came under more scrutiny than most for its policy. However, many smaller manufacturers offer little-to-no guarantees.

“These attacks are evolving, and it is only natural that many people struggle to find the tools to protect their devices, data, homes and businesses from digital threats – protecting smart equipment can be extremely difficult for the average user,” concludes Marozas.
