Samsung has announced that it’s powering the world’s first 3GPP-compliant nationwide public safety network.

The PS-LTE network, initially launched in Korea, uses 700MHz spectrum and provides fast and reliable connectivity for emergency personnel in over 330 organisations including police, firefighters, medics, and the military.

Simultaneous transmission for up to 2,500 user devices per cell is supported by the deployment; more than double previous-generation technologies.

Seungil Kim, VP and Head of Korea Business, Networks Business at Samsung, said:

“Samsung is proud to take part in building the world’s first nationwide PS-LTE network based on 3GPP standards in Korea, leveraging our end-to-end PS-LTE solutions.

A reliable network is critical for real-time communication among multiple institutions in case of emergencies. We will continue to offer advanced PS-LTE solutions to bolster Korea’s PS-LTE network, meeting the highest standards for reliability, performance, and security.”

Samsung’s Mission-Critical Push-to-Talk (MCPTT) is used for the service and features multimedia broadcast capabilities through evolved Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service (eMBMS).

While the deployment has initially launched in Korea in partnership with local mobile operators, the groundbreaking network sets a precedent that will likely be adopted in other global markets such as the UK.

Thomas Riedel, Head of Samsung Networks Europe, commented:

“Samsung continues to advance its MCPTT solutions, which can further enhance the mission-critical network capabilities in the UK to support stronger collaborative abilities across emergency response teams.”

Samsung was picked in 2016 to lead the end-to-end deployment of a PS-LTE solution and began its buildout in 2018. The deployment completed in March 2021.
