India has signed three Memoranda of Understanding (MOU) agreements with leading UK academic institutions to hasten 5G deployment and maximise its benefits.
The UK institutions which signed the MOUs are King’s College, University of Surrey, and the University of Bristol. Academics will share their expertise and research with the Indian government-owned body C-DOT, the nation’s telecoms technology development centre.
India’s High Commissioner to the UK, Y.K. Sinha, said to reporters:
“It is a win-win situation for both C-DOT and the three universities. The Government of India is fully committed to ensuring that we march in step with the world, and be among the leaders to accelerate the exploration, adoption, and full-scale deployment of 5G technology for the benefit of our citizens.
The signing of these agreements with premier academic institutions in the UK is an important milestone for us. We expect this strong partnership to produce accelerated outcomes that benefit both our great countries.”
The partners will now explore how 5G can benefit citizens in areas such as transport, smart cities, health, manufacturing, railways, public safety, and power.
Part of this work is how rapidly-advancing new technologies which are not telecoms innovations, such as AI, can support 5G networks and enable more use cases while further improving reliability.
In return, the UK will be able to participate in the establishment of 5G test beds in India which can integrate with those in the UK.
