Samsung is set to showcase its new Smart TV design at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2013 show in Las Vegas on January 8-11, with the rumour mill going into overdrive as to what features it will contain.
In a teaser from a few weeks ago, the South Korean manufacturer promised “something new” in the TV space, and a recent promotional video (below) has served only to whet people’s appetites further.
A post on the global Samsung Tomorrow blog has teased a photo of what this new TV may look like, and, as can be seen from the picture, the object is semi-transparent and portrait-esque – a radical overhaul.

One of the more exciting developments in TV design –a bezel free set – doesn’t appear to be on the agenda here, if the picture is anything to go by, yet Samsung described the photo as “a true innovation of TV design…with an unprecedented new TV shape”.
The CES show will have other unveilings from Samsung too. The electronics firm has also announced the unveiling of an Evolution kit for its 2012 Smart TVs, which should hopefully allow earlier models to fit in line with current hardware specs.
With each update in the connected TV sphere, previous iterations swiftly become obsolete, so this appears to be a very good move from a consumer perspective.
Obsolescence isn’t the only fear for consumers, of course. A video was posted last month by Malta-based security researchers ReVuln of an unspecified Samsung Smart TV being attacked, with the hackers gaining “root” access to channel lists, firmware, USB drives, and remote controls.
Elsewhere, research from eMarketer released this week has shown that smart TV penetration has gone up by 25% in the US during 2012.
According to the research, this year’s end will see 35.1m American homes kitted out with an Internet-enabled set, with 17.4% of consumers using connected TV at least once a month at the moment.
The market seems good to go right now, but is it ready for what Samsung is about to throw at it at the CES show?
