Cybersecurity giant Trend Micro has teamed up with Fujitsu to demonstrate a solution for securing private 5G networks.

The partners simulated a smart factory using private 5G for connectivity and showed how Trend Micro Mobile Network Security is able to keep the network safe.

Akihiko Omikawa, Executive Vice President at Trend Micro, said:

“We’re delighted to be joining forces with Fujitsu to tackle the immense challenge of cybersecurity for private 5G.

Together, we are making smart manufacturing more secure to ensure production isn’t stopped due to a cyberattack.”

Trend Micro Mobile Network Security provides endpoint security for IoT devices via their SIM card and network-wide security on private 5G systems.

Listed benefits of the security solution include:

  • Detecting and protecting against threats to a private 5G network
  • Authentication of devices trying to connect to the 5G network
  • Blocking of unauthorised communications in real-time

The simulated smart factory was equipped with high-definition monitoring cameras and automatic guided vehicles (AGV). The partners were able to use the environment to gain an overview of the entire system and correlate threat detection and prevention data from the devices and network.

Private 5G networks are expected to unlock the full potential of smart factories around the world—helping to reduce emissions, improve production, and reduce defects and downtime.

Fujitsu and Trend Micro are launching a field trial which will be conducted at the former’s Oyama plant in Tochigi Prefecture, Japan. The trial is set to run until September 2021.
