Qualcomm Technologies, ZTE and China Mobile have announced that they have successfully achieved the world’s first end-to-end 5G NR Interoperability Data Testing (IoDT) system demonstrating a data connection based on the 3GPP R15 standard.

The end-to-end 5G NR system operates in 3.5GHz and supports 100MHz bandwidth, compliant with the 3GPP Release-15 5G New Radio layer 1 framework, including the scalable OFDM numerology, new advanced channel coding and modulation schemes, and the low-latency self-contained slot structure. The end-to-end 5G NR IoDT system is designed to efficiently achieve multi-gigabit per second peak data rates at significantly lower air interface latency than 4G networks.

“Achieving the world’s first end-to-end 5G NR interoperable data connection is true testament to our 5G leadership, driving toward the timely launch of standard-compliant commercial networks,” said Cristiano Amon, Qualcomm executive vice president in a statement. “Qualcomm Technologies is committed to the continued success of China’s wireless industry and we are excited to collaborate with ZTE and China Mobile to accelerate the path to 5G in China.”

Implementation of 5G NR technologies serves as a crucial forward step in meeting increasing connectivity requirements, Qualcomm argues, from emerging mobile broadband experiences such as streaming high-definition video and immersive virtual/augmented reality in the future, as well as enabling new high-reliability, low-latency services for autonomous vehicles, drones and industrial control.

The announcement is comparable in the 5G realm alongside Intel’s recent launch of two new modems directed towards the speedy adoption of 5G: Intel XMM 8000 series and Intel XMM 7660. Intel XMM 8000 series is the company’s first family of 5G new radio (5G NR) multi-mode commercial modems. It operates in both sub-6 GHz and millimetre wave global spectrum bands. A number of devices such as phones, PCs, fixed wireless consumer premise equipment (CPE) and even vehicles can connect to the modem to access 5G network. Intel XMM 7660 is an LTE modem, claimed to be the first commercial 5G modem capable of delivering multi-mode support for the full 5G non-standalone and standalone NR, as well as various 2G, 3G (including CDMA) and 4G legacy modes.
