Following its launch of the world’s first commercial 5G network last month, Ooredoo is debuting a home broadband device.

Qatar-based Ooredoo claims its home broadband device will offer speeds up to 2 Gbps. That represents over 20 times the speed of the company’s fibre broadband.

Waleed Al Sayed, Chief Executive Officer, Ooredoo Qatar, said:

“Ooredoo is ecstatic to announce that last night, we became the first in the world to have a live commercial 5G home broadband device.

This is another amazing world-first milestone for Ooredoo and Qatar and demonstrates that we are on track to offering 5G mega speeds for everyone in the very near future.

I look forward to seeing how this technology will benefit all sectors in Qatar, from businesses, to education, and beyond."

With its claimed speeds, customers will be able to download movies in seconds and stream VR gaming experiences. Where 5G is unavailable the device is also compatible with the operator’s 4G network.

Ooredoo launched its commercial 5G network in select areas last month, but until now has not sold any devices compatible with it. The operator plans to upgrade 100 base stations across Qatar to 5G within the next three months.

“We are the first company in the world to offer access to 5G technology and services,” says Al Sayed. “The people of Qatar are the first to have access to the incredible benefits this technological upgrade will bring.”

The company says current live 5G sites, which include West Bay and Katara, have demonstrated an impressive speed of 2.51 Gbps with an extremely high throughput and low latency.

Ooredoo is now looking to test IoT applications on its 5G network — including smart cars, VR, AR, and drones.

“The 5G Supernet will be the infrastructural backbone of Qatar as our nation pushes to offer the latest smart applications in-line with Qatar National Vision 2030,” adds Al Sayed.

“This network will provide the necessary foundation to introduce a wave of new innovations.”
