Nokia and Vale will implement a cognitive monitoring network service aimed at enhancing the performance and safety of mining operations.
This partnership builds on an established relationship at Vale’s autonomous iron ore mine in Carajás, recognised as the largest iron ore open-pit mine worldwide. The technology, tested in Carajás, promises a groundbreaking network capable of foresight; sensing, thinking, and acting proactively to facilitate mission-critical communication in the mine’s hazardous environment.
As industries anticipate future mission-critical networks, there’s a growing emphasis on embedding cognitive services across almost every operational layer. Nokia Bell Labs and Vale are set to explore such systems, striving for connectivity solutions to support and automate future mining operations and enhance planning intelligence.

Central to this ambitious project is the creation of a comprehensive digital twin for mission-critical operations within the mine. By integrating the cognitive monitoring network service, the initiative seeks to harness data from various mine production systems – including hauling trucks and autonomous drillers – and correlate this with network key performance indicators.
The endeavour is supported by Nokia Bell Labs’ NiX (Nokia Industrial eXperience) research platform, which spurred the formation of the Network Cognitive Digital Mine (CDM) venture within Nokia’s Strategy and Technology organisation.
