Nokia and Belgium’s Port of Zeebrugge have completed the first phase of its 5G-ready and industrial-grade private wireless network deployment.

By integrating the Nokia Digital Automation Cloud platform, Zeebrugge would be able to offer private wireless connectivity to over 100 endpoints across the entire port operations.

Zeebrugge would not only deliver a variety of new and enhanced services to improve the port’s operational performance, but also distinguish the Belgian village as a leader in port transformation and digitalisation. Not just that, the network will also be able to track, analyse, and manage connected devices across multiple port-based applications in real-time. What’s more, it will aim to speed up port innovation and automation with deployment of IoT, autonomous vehicles, AR and drones.

Rick Goetinck, CEO, Port of Zeebrugge said: “Introduction of an advanced private wireless network will act as a beacon for our partners to develop and deliver new solutions right across the logistics value chain. Nokia, in close collaboration with local service provider Citymesh, has demonstrated outstanding 5G capabilities during platform deployment, making phase one a complete success.”

Earlier this month, Nokia added 5G and edge capabilities to its Worldwide IoT Network Grid (WING) managed service that focuses on helping operators capture early IoT market share without investing in infrastructure. The evolved form of the Nokia WING will allow operators to use new business models and foray into industries like critical public services, remote healthcare, connected cars, and real-time industrial monitoring and control.

Last year, the Port of Rotterdam announced that it was operational with its IoT platform by announcing that its first application for a hydro/meteo has been put into operation. The system uses an extensive network of sensors to provide accurate and up-to-date water (hydro) and weather (meteo) data particularly for the planning and management of shipping and has allowed access to the latest technologies, including edge computing, real-time analytics, artificial intelligence, hyper-precise data and blockchain.
