Intel has announced ‘substantial advances in its wireless product roadmap’ with new modems aiming to accelerate the adoption of 5G.
The tech giant has announced the introduction of Intel XMM 8000 series, the company’s first family of 5G new radio (5G NR) multi-mode commercial modems, and Intel XMM 7660, which is Intel’s latest LTE modem. It unveiled its XMM 7560 modem at the Mobile World Congress 2017, which has achieved gigabit-class speeds.
The Intel XMM 8000 series is a family of commercial 5G multi-mode modems, operating in both sub-6 GHz and millimetre wave global spectrum bands. The series allows a range of devices to connect to 5G networks from phones or PCs to fixed wireless consumer premise equipment (CPE) and even vehicles.
The Intel XMM 8060 is claimed as the first commercial 5G modem capable of delivering multi-mode support for the full 5G non-standalone and standalone NR, as well as various 2G, 3G (including CDMA) and 4G legacy modes. The 8060, which is expected to ship in commercial customer devices in mid-2019, will boost deployment of 5G-ready devices prior to anticipated broad deployment of 5G networks in 2020.
Meanwhile, the Intel XMM 7660 aims to deliver the latest LTE modem delivers Cat-19 capabilities and supports speed up to 1.6 gigabits per second. This LTE modem features advanced multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO), carrier aggregation and a wide range of band support. It will ship in commercial devices in 2019.
Moreover, the chipmaker is setting the pace for the industry with its Intel 5G Modem. Along with the Intel Mobile Trial Platform, Intel technology is being used in many of the trials across the world.
