A joint EU-South Korea project known as 5GCHAMPION will be demonstrated next week during the 2018 Winter Games.
The system combines terrestrial wireless communications, including mmWave access, with satellite communication technology. 5GCHAMPION aims to demonstrate its fully-integrated intercontinental 5G network proof of concept.
Dr. Emilio Calvanese Strinati, Innovation and Scientific Director at Leti, says:
“This proof of concept is the first time that state-of-the-art terrestrial wireless communication, including future key enablers such as mmWave access, will be seamlessly combined with disruptive satellite communication.
This technology will form a 5G network with multi-radio-access technologies (multi-RAT) that is optimized to serve user equipment in various applications.”
Visitors to Yulgok Street (temporarily renamed to ‘IoT Street’) will be able to ride a bus which demonstrates the network while transporting them between event venues. Furthermore, attendees will be able to “visit” a site in Finland by using VR headsets.
For the demonstration, the researchers expect data transfer speeds of 2.5 Gbps. The teams are also working on enabling 5G connections while traveling at high-speed, such as on trains.
The 5GCHAMPION consortium includes 21 universities, research institutes, and companies from Europe and South Korea. Their research is supported by the European Commission and the Korean Ministry of Science and ICT.
