ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute) has released a new global standard for securing smartphones.
The standard – TS 103 732, or, more catchingly, “Consumer Mobile Device Protection Profile” – claims to identify key security and privacy risks for user data and provides appropriate protection.
Alex Leadbeater, Cybersecurity Chair at ETSI, said:
“Following the excellent improvement in security achieved with ETSI EN 303 645 for consumer IoT devices, ETSI has been working on securing other consumer devices.
ETSI TS 103 732 provides a complete solution to secure smartphones and tablets, minimising privacy risks, and maximising user confidence that their smart devices protect their data.”
Security features in the new specification include cryptographic support, user data protection, identification and authentication, security management, privacy protection, resistance to physical attack, secure boot, and trusted communication channels.
The independent standardisation firm believes TS 103 732 will protect the increasing amounts of key user data stored on mobile devices such as photos, videos, user location, emails, SMS, calls, passwords for web services, and fitness related data.
ETSI also says the standard can be used as a common methodology for evaluators to assess the security of consumer mobile devices and is suitable for certification initiatives such as the European Cybersecurity Act.
A “series” of consumer cybersecurity standards is promised by ETSI over the next 12-18 months, of which TS 103 732 is just the first.
