Ericsson is set to showcase its latest 5G advancements for railways at InnoTrans, a trade fair for transport innovation.

During the show, the Swedish telecoms giant will demonstrate how its 5G Corridor and Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS) solutions can improve passenger and freight transport.

‘5G Corridors’ – deployed along railway lines – promise to deliver gigabit speeds directly to passengers, enabling seamless working, streaming, and communication during journeys. This technology also presents an opportunity for rail operators to offer enhanced onboard services such as real-time travel updates and infotainment options.

FRMCS aims to replace the ageing GSM-R technology currently employed by railways. Developed in partnership with the International Union of Railways (UIC) and other industry players, FRMCS harnesses the power of LTE and 5G to enable real-time data exchange between trains—significantly boosting operational safety and efficiency.

“We believe that 5G and FRMCS technologies will drive rail communication into a new era, improving safety, efficiency, and the passenger experience,” says Magnus Packendorff, Head of Mission Critical at Ericsson.

“Our commitment is to support railways and mobile operators in evolving their services from GSM-R to FRMCS. Collaboratively we can embrace advanced technologies that benefit the railway industry and its customers.”

Joining over 2,700 international exhibitors at InnoTrans, Ericsson will be demonstrating its FRMCS and 5G Corridor solutions to an anticipated audience of 130,000 visitors from over 130 countries.

In addition to showcasing its latest technologies, Ericsson will also participate in the InnoTrans Convention, a high-profile event running concurrently with the trade fair. Katrin Bachert, a key account manager for service providers, will represent Ericsson in a panel discussion on Germany’s Gigabit Innovation Track (GINT) project.
