Networking solutions company Brocade has announced that mobile communications service provider China Mobile has selected Brocade’s advanced network functions virtualization (NFV) solution to support its most strategic corporate development initiative.
With the deployment of Brocade Virtual Traffic Manager (vTM) at important data centres of China Mobile, China Mobile will be able to deliver highly available and agile cloud services while keeping the operating cost under control.
China Mobile is playing a leading role in the Chinese government’s Internet Plus initiative, which aims to increase competitiveness and support the development of new business models within conventional industries through the use of technologies, including fixed and mobile Internet connectivity, cloud computing, big data, and the Internet of Things. China Mobile is not only providing IP connectivity services, but also large-scale cloud services to meet the requirements of major enterprises and government customers.
China Mobile will be initially deploying Brocade vTM at its Southern Base and Northern Base data centers in conjunction with communication company Nokia. Brocade vTM software will run within the Nuage Networks Virtualized Services Platform, which is a commercially supported version of the standard-based OpenStack SDN orchestration environment. During testing, the project team was able to spin up a Brocade vTM instance of 200 Mbps on a single virtual machine host.
Brocade vTM will be able to achieve elastic capacity from 1 to 1000 Mbps on a single virtual machine host with the orchestration upgrade for China Mobile’s Cloud data centre, the company adds. The testing also revealed that getting the equivalent load balancing performance on a hardware-based application delivery controller would be 50% more expensive than the Brocade vTM solution.
