A new report finds that Berlin has the best overall 5G mobile network performance across 10 European capitals.
The comprehensive benchmark, conducted by network testing firm MedUX, analysed the quality and speed of 5G services in major cities across Europe.
For the report, researchers drove over 4,000 kilometres across 10 countries during 2023 to conduct network tests to grade “Quality of Experience” for average consumers.
Berlin edged out second-place finisher Milan to rank highest with a near-perfect score of 4.69 out of 5. The German capital showcased blazing fast 5G speeds, with typical web browsing sessions loading in under 1,550 milliseconds—up to 25 percent quicker than other cities. Berlin also scored top marks for streaming reliability and time-to-play.
While Berlin dominated in speed, Milan took first place for overall network consistency with 99.91 percent successful data sessions. Milan was closely followed by Barcelona (99.82%) while Berlin, for comparison, was fifth overall (99.56%) with almost negligible difference between them.
Portugal was found to have the widest 5G availability, with coverage topping 90 percent in Porto. In terms of raw download capability, Lisbon came first, with median speeds exceeding 537 Mbps.
The report suggests that many European cities now surpass London, which placed 10th overall, in 5G capability.
“Speed is not the critical factor, and the telecoms industry must adapt to meet the actual needs and priorities of the end user,” said MedUX CMO Rafael González. “We look forward to seeing operators use our findings when planning, deploying, monitoring, and optimising 5G networks.”
With new 5G SA (Standalone) rollouts beginning across the continent, the firm expects network quality to continue improving over the months ahead.
