Ofcom: 5G spectrum auction is complete – and here are the results

Telecoms regulator Ofcom has confirmed the completion of its milestone auction for 5G spectrum and is now ready to announce the results.

Ofcom ran a spectrum auction for two frequency bands – 2.3 GHz, and 3.4 GHz.

2.3 GHz is geared towards 4G use and will help to improve capacity as more devices and users congest networks. 3.4 GHz is the frequency most eyes are on, as it’s the primary band earmarked for 5G.

GSMA: The U.S will ‘pioneer’ 5G with 190m connections by 2025

Canada: ENCQOR partnership will advance the development of 5G technologies

O2 believes 5G will save each household £450 per year

A new analysis from Teléfonica-owned O2 has revealed the extent of economic benefits it expects 5G to deliver.

Ofcom’s 5G auction will proceed as Three’s court appeal fails

Mobile operator Three has failed its court appeal to force Ofcom to impose stricter restrictions on the sale of 5G spectrum in an upcoming auction.

Three, owned by Hong-Kong conglomerate CK Hutchison, is the smallest mobile operator in the UK in terms of subscribers. In terms of existing spectrum ownership, Three owns a 15 percent share of the market. For comparison — BT/EE holds a 42 percent share, Vodafone 29 percent, and O2 14 percent.

Nokia and Telefónica Germany sign MoU to create joint 5G Innovation Cluster

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) has been signed by Nokia and Telefónica Germany leading to the creation of a joint 5G Innovation Cluster.
