China Mobile, Huawei, and Intel complete 5G interoperability test

US chipmaker Intel has announced the completion of 5G interoperability testing with telco giant China Mobile and equipment maker Huawei.

The 5G interoperability and development testing (IODT) was in compliance with the latest 3GPP Release-15 standard.

Vodafone is hot on Ooredoo's heels with plans for 5G services 

Vodafone is not far behind its rival Ooredoo in deploying 5G services in Qatar, with the expectation they’ll launch before the end of the year.

Last month, Telecoms reported Ooredoo launched its first 5G home broadband device following the Qatar-based operator’s launch of the world’s first commercial 5G network in May.

Sprint’s ties with Huawei may complicate T-Mobile merger

Congressional lawmakers want the pending Sprint–T-Mobile merger examined over the former's possible Chinese government links.

Trump’s administration continues to be wary of Chinese telecoms firms as it asks the FCC not to grant a license to China Mobile.

Citing national security concerns, the U.S. National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) recommended the FCC deny China Mobile Ltd’s application to offer telecommunications services from within the United States.

Huawei appears to cut research funding in Australia

Huawei appears to be cutting research funding in Australia as it continues to face problems in the country over national security fears.

The company’s Australian financial reports show a drop in research spending from $81,000 in 2016 to zero last year. For comparison, back in 2015, the company spent $8.3 million – and $10.1 million the year before that.

The company denies any reduction in research spending.

Trade body calls on Ofcom to modernise spectrum auctions

Fixed wireless trade body WISPA (Wireless Internet Service Providers Association) has called on Ofcom to modernise spectrum auctions.

Policy group ETNO calls EU’s telecoms overhaul a ‘missed opportunity’

An overhaul of telecoms laws by the EU has been called a ‘missed opportunity’ by the association which represents Europe's operators.

Senators challenge the accuracy of FCC’s rural broadband map

Senators have expressed concern over the accuracy of a map the FCC is using to plan the allocation of over $4 billion in subsidies to improve rural broadband.

Under the Mobile Fund Phase II plans, money will be redirected over the next decade away from where private capital is already being supplied, and instead used to help bring 4G services to Americans in under-served rural areas.

Australian MP is next to call for a ban on Chinese 5G equipment

Australian Labor MP Michael Danby has become the latest politician to call for a ban on buying 5G network equipment from Chinese firms claiming they are ‘controlled’ by the government.
