Ofcom has launched an investigation into BT following a national issue that disrupted national emergency services calls on June 25th.
On that day, individuals across the country were unable to connect with emergency services by dialling 999, as advised by the police, fire, and ambulance departments. Instead, they were instructed to call alternative numbers such as the non-emergency 101 line.
According to Ofcom’s regulations, BT and other service providers are obligated to implement all necessary measures to ensure uninterrupted access to emergency organisations as part of their call services.
Additionally, these providers are required to take appropriate actions to ensure the maximum availability of calls and internet services during catastrophic network breakdowns or force majeure events.
The investigation initiated by Ofcom will focus on determining whether BT has failed to comply with its regulatory obligations and whether the company took adequate measures to mitigate the impact of the disruption. Ofcom will closely scrutinise BT’s actions leading up to and during the incident to assess their adherence to the prescribed guidelines.
BT reportedly took three hours to alert the government of the issue. Part of the inquiry will look into whether that should have been, and could have been, faster.
The disruption of emergency services is a matter of grave concern, as people rely heavily on immediate and reliable access to emergency personnel during critical situations. Ofcom’s investigation aims to hold BT accountable for any potential lapses in its service provision and determine whether any regulatory breaches have occurred.
The outcome of this investigation will have significant implications for BT and may result in penalties or other remedial actions if the regulatory obligations are found to have been disregarded.
It will also serve as a reminder to all communication service providers of the critical importance of ensuring the uninterrupted availability of emergency services, as well as the need to take proactive measures to minimise disruptions during unforeseen events.
