Deutsche Telekom opens IoT innovation space at IBM’s Watson IoT Center
Deutsche Telekom is further expanding its IoT portfolio with the opening of a new Telekom IoT innovation space at IBM’s Watson IoT Center in Munich, Germany.
A team of IoT experts from both the enterprises will work together to formulate solutions that draw upon Deutsche Telekom’s expertise in the field of connectivity, security and IoT solutions and IBM’s capabilities in AI, big data and IoT.
Both Deutsche Telekom and IBM will delve into solutions circled around IoT and AI based on the Low Power Wide Area (LPWA) NarrowBand IoT (NB-IoT) standard. They will then analyse how companies can make use of the insights from the extreme amounts of data generated via this new connectivity technology. During the initial phase, the work will be limited to applications for customers in the following industries: manufacturing, smart cities, and healthcare.
At the Telekom IoT innovation space, a number of IoT applications such as smart parking, smart waste and water management, air quality monitoring and predictive maintenance solutions will be put up for display.
Ingo Hofacker, who is responsible for the IoT business in the Deutsche Telekom Group, said: "The IBM Watson IoT Center is a fantastic environment in which we can not only closely collaborate to develop the IoT ecosystem, but also innovate with NB-IoT technologies to help us deliver the transformative business results that our customers demand.”
Elsewhere, Deutsche Telekom has emerged as the leader in deploying NarrowBand IoT (NB-IoT) throughout Europe and North America. Now available across select US states and across eight markets in Europe and, Deutsche Telekom is all set to launch NB-IoT nationally in the US by mid-2018 and in many of its European markets by the end of the year.
The widespread availability of the sensor network opens the way for NB-IoT solutions in almost all areas including transport & logistics, industrial automation, and public sector. Deutsche Telekom’s primary focus areas for NB-IoT deployment is the development and implementation of smart city solutions based on NB-IoT as the sensor network is best suited for many smart city applications such as smart lighting, smart public transport and smart waste management.
