Verizon and its technology partner Nokia has added another achievement to their book by conducting successful transmission of a 3GPP New Radio (NR) 5G signal to a receiver in a moving vehicle for the first time.
The trial, which was conducted at Nokia’s campus in Murray Hill NJ in June 2018, follows the companies’ successful completion of consecutive outdoor data sessions over the 5G NR standard, and the successful multi-carrier aggregation to boost those signals into Gbps range.
During the testing, the signal seamlessly handed off from one radio sector to another. In this test, a data transmission on 28 GHz spectrum was sent from two 5G NR radios on the Nokia building to a vehicle outfitted with a receiver and equipment to measure transmission statistics. The vehicle smoothly travelled between the two radios achieving seamless 5G NR Layer 3 3GPP-compliant mobility handoff of the signal between the two sectors (intra-gNB and inter-DU).
Verizon VP of technology development and planning, Bill Stone, said: “Unlike some of the incremental 5G technology announcements we’ve seen lately, tests like the one we conducted are significant advancements in the development of 5G technology.” Furthermore, Verizon also announced that it will be the first to launch 5G residential service across for US markets in the H2-2018. These markets are Los Angeles, Sacramento, Houston and Indianapolis.
Elsewhere, Nokia signed a memorandum of understanding with China’s Tencent last month to jointly conduct R&D work to explore the potential of 5G for the benefit of billions of Chinese internet users. Both companies would initiate an end-to-end 5G test environment in China’s southern city of Shenzhen. They would also leverage the AI and automation management capabilities enabled by 5G to promote international standards and an open-source ecosystem to expand the evolution of latest services. The firms will also run a 5G application research by using technologies like Edge Computing, which will benefit a variety of markets ranging from entertainment, transportation, intelligent manufacturing, energy and finance.
