UK think tank warns Huawei 5G participation would be ‘naive'

UK security think tank the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) has warned allowing Huawei to participate in 5G would be 'naive' and ‘irresponsible’.

The RUSI is the world's oldest independent think tank on international defence and security. In its report, the institute highlights Beijing’s history of using cyberattacks on the West to advance Chinese interests.

Huawei has long been accused of being controlled by the Chinese state and Western officials have warned it would be...

Huawei founder: "There's no way the US can crush us"

Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei has said “there’s no way the US can crush” his firm, in response to American calls on allies to ban Chinese 5G equipment.

America has long taken a hardline stance against Huawei which predates the Trump administration. Trump’s government has increased pressure on allies to ban Huawei equipment which some claim to be part of the wider ‘trade war’ against China.

Zhengfei made the comment in an interview with the BBC,...

Russia will unplug from the internet to ensure independence

In the coming months, Russia will unplug from the global internet as part of an experiment to ensure the nation can function without it.

A proposed law called the Digital Economy National Program would require Russian ISPs to ensure they’re able to operate if foreign powers isolate the country.

Organisations which maintain the international DNS system are based around the world, but none are based in Russia. That means, in theory, it would be possible for Russia to be disconnected.

Sprint is suing AT&T for its ‘misleading’ 5G-E branding

While rivals started off by mocking AT&T for its ‘misleading’ 5G-E branding, Sprint is taking it a step further and suing the operator.

Sprint claims it commissioned a survey which found 54 percent of consumers believed the 5G-E networks were the same as, or better than, 5G.

A further 43 percent of respondents believed if they purchase an AT&T device with 5G-E today means it will be 5G compatible. Our savvy readers...

Docomo builds 5G system to stream 8K stereoscopic VR

NTT Docomo has built a 5G-ready system which can stream 8K stereoscopic VR, opening a wide range of possibilities.

While most of us are just getting to grips with 4K, technology is already moving on. 8K is becoming the next big thing (quite literally, in the case of some displays!)

Docomo’s system can stream high-resolution panoramic VR content from any location over 5G.

The solution consists of an 8K 3D camera with 360-degree video recording abilities, a Yamaha-developed spherical 3D microphone with 64...

Verizon halved 5G latency using edge computing

US telecommunications giant Verizon has employed the use of edge computing in a successful bid to slash 5G latency in half.

5G is set to cut latency over its predecessors, meaning reduced time for information to make a roundtrip. This will open a range of possibilities for things such as video games, real-time VR, and even remote surgeries.

Verizon engineers installed Multi-access Edge Compute (MEC) equipment and MEC platform software into a network facility closer to the network edge.

Reducing the distance...

Nokia appears to be profiting from Huawei 5G bans

Nokia posted earnings on Thursday and the figures indicate bans of Huawei’s 5G equipment has increased demand for alternatives.

Over the fourth quarter, Nokia’s profits reached £652 million ($852 million) from £629 million ($822 million) a year earlier. Sales grew three percent to £6 billion ($7.8 billion).

While the growth is not huge, it’s above analyst predictions. This indicates the bans and uncertainty surrounding Huawei 5G equipment is giving Nokia a boost.

Optus concedes Huawei ban means 5G launching without best tech

Optus has conceded Australia’s ban on Huawei technology has led to building its 5G network without the best available equipment.

"From a pure technology perspective, Huawei is probably ahead of the other three," said Optus CEO Allen Lew to The Sydney Morning Herald. "But what we've got from the other suppliers will enable us to provide a globally competitive...
