US operators will meet White House officials to discuss 5G

Representatives from the four major operators in the US are set to meet White House officials to discuss 5G and its potential.

T-Mobile, AT&T, and Sprint have all confirmed their attendance. Verizon is understood to be attending but declined to comment.

None of the operators revealed who they will send to represent their companies, but high-level executives are expected.

The full agenda is unknown but Trump’s administration will be seeking to gain a better understanding of 5G’s benefits...

SK Telecom becomes the latest operator to snub Huawei

South Korea’s largest operator, SK Telecom, has become the latest to snub Huawei when it comes to choice of 5G equipment supplier.

SK Telecom has announced it will be accepting bids from Huawei’s rivals – Samsung, Ericsson, and Nokia – to supply equipment for its 5G network.

Many industry experts speculated Huawei would be named among SK Telecom’s preferred bidders, although the vendor has been caught up in controversy much like its troubles in the US and Australia.

Vodafone is doubling the size of its European NB-IoT networks

Vodafone has announced it will be doubling the size of its European NB-IoT (Narrowband Internet of Things) by the end of 2019.

NB-IoT provides ‘industrial grade’ Low-Power Wide-Area connectivity for applications such as streetlights, connected healthcare monitors, and wearable devices.

US telecoms giant AT&T has announced it will be using 5G equipment from Ericsson, Nokia, and Samsung for its upcoming network. Predictably, that means no US operator will be using equipment from Chinese firms.

Almost 20 percent of UK roads suffer from little-to-no mobile signal

While governments and operators prepare for 5G, the UK still has over 49,000 miles of road with poor or no mobile signal.

A study conducted by the RAC Foundation has found two percent of UK roads (over 5,500 miles) are unable to receive a mobile signal from any of the nation’s four mobile networks.

The inability to receive a signal is at best a mild annoyance due to problems such as potential lack of navigation, at worst the inability to call for help in a breakdown or accident.

Charter CFO says 5G is ‘not comparable’ to DOCSIS 3.1

Charter Communications CFO Chris Winfrey is adamant that 5G will not pose a threat to fixed-line providers as it cannot offer the same capabilities.

Speaking at the Bank of America Merrill Lynch Media, Communications & Entertainment Conference on Thursday, Winfrey said:

“I don’t see anything about 5G that ever makes it comparable to DOCSIS 3.1 or DOCSIS 3.1 Full Duplex, or any capability we have through fixed line service.”
