Operators call for EU policy reform ahead of 5G rollout

The CEOs of many large European operators around the continent have signed an open letter calling for ‘genuine’ reform of the EU with regards to spectrum policy ahead of the rollout of 5G networks.

Telecoms ministers are due to meet in Tallinn, Estonia tomorrow (18th July, 2017) for a meeting on the conditions needed for the successful deployment of 5G technology in Europe.

Digital Evolution Index: The UK is among the handful of ‘digital elite’ countries – and leader of Europe

In the latest Digital Evolution Index, the UK has emerged as one of a handful of countries deemed a ‘digital elite’ due to being “highly digitally evolved and advancing quickly."

Arcep says 5G services could be launched in France by 2018

Arcep, the communications regulator in France, has suggested 5G services could launch in France in 2018 after publishing responses to its public consultation.

The authority wishes to begin frequency allocations in the 3.5 GHz and 2.6 GHz bands this year “to satisfy the urgent needs that were expressed regarding fixed superfast internet access and professional mobile radio services.”

ESA partners with space industry on ‘Satellite for 5G’

The ESA (European Space Agency) has joined forces with 16 space companies on a new ‘Satellite for 5G’ initiative.

Satellite for 5G aims to offer truly global high-speed coverage even in areas difficult to reach by cell towers such as up mountains and remote islands. GSMA urges EU telecom ministers to consider its suggestions ahead of reform plan

The GSMA has urged European telecoms ministers to seek for greater ambitions on telecoms framework reforms, as the discussion for amendments to the draft European Electronic Communications Code in an EU Council meeting looms.
