Has YouTube accelerated the death of TV with paid channels?

The rise of on-demand content and inevitable death of linear scheduled broadcasting has perhaps been pushed forward as YouTube announces monthly paid channels.

Originally launching with a few select partners; including UFC and Sesame Street, the channels will cost on average $2.99 (£1.93) monthly. Each channel will offer a 14-day free trial to test the content before you commit to supporting.

Google’s “Fiber TV” app is now available on iPad

TelecomsTech has previously reported about Google’s “Fiber” initiative, bringing high-speed broadband and TV packages to select areas of Kansas City.

As part of the TV service a mobile app had been released on Android – and now a similar app has just been unleashed on the iPad.

 

The app allows users to have complete control of their Fiber TV experience; from browsing, to buying, to even watching on-demand content directly on the tablet itself.

Mobile streamed music revenue to reach $1.7 billion

Across a variety of formats, music is undoubtedly the most mature segment of mobile entertainment. The global revenues from streamed music services on mobile devices are expected to rise by more than 40 percent to $1.7 billion, according to the latest market study by Juniper Research. Nielsen finally introduces metrics for online TV

Most TV viewers have likely heard of Nielsen at some stage. If you haven’t, they are generally the organisation which offers industry-standard ratings to measure viewership. Up until now these ratings have been becoming more and more irrelevant as audiences move online.

‘White space’ devices are on the way, says Ofcom

Ofcom, the broadcasting regulator of the United Kingdom, has called for a pilot of an innovative new batch of “white space” devices utilising gaps in the radio spectrum.

The plan is to use white space in order to test broadcasts which will not interfere with any current spectrum. This will be enforced by broadcasters only being allowed to utilise where the spaces are, and the power levels they are restricted to on a dedicated website updated by Ofcom.

According to the latest market study by ABI Research, American companies like Netflix, Hulu, Apple and Amazon helped to drive the over-the-top (OTT) video entertainment market past $8 billion in 2012. OTT video revenue went up and up in 2012, says ABI

The traditional channels of television consumption continue to change, and the latest research from ABI offers more pointers in that regard as the over the top (OTT) video market hit $8bn in 2012.
