“Provide clarification on PRISM”, says EU commissioner

The past week I’ve written two articles regarding the US Government; allegations of spying using PRISM, and calls by involved companies for more transparency as a result.

The Director of National Intelligence claims PRISM is solely for data-collection of non-US citizens; naturally, the EU’s commissioner for justice and fundamental rights, Viviane Reding, wants some clarification.

In a...

Facebook, Twitter join Google’s call for surveillance transparency

The US Government has been under heavy-fire recently over leaked documents such as PRISM; showing the extent of potentially unwarranted surveillance operations. Companies including Google, Facebook, and Twitter were all pulled into question; now they’re calling for transparency...

At first glance many would think “convenient timing” but, in fairness to those involved, many have taken steps previously for their relevant company to be totally open...

Telcos not out of the woods yet after another flat quarter

Matt Walker, Principal Analyst, Networks & TechnologyMost service providers have reported 1Q13 earnings now. The results were largely as expected. Most telcos face flat to declining revenues, putting their cost base under pressure. For telcos representing over 90% of the global market, revenues and capex both dropped by roughly 1% in 1Q13 versus 1Q12 (YoY). The telcos with the slowest growth were also among the largest: Telefonica, FT Orange, Telecom Italia, and KPN. A weak European economy and ongoing cuts...

Factually both leaders agree on one issue, international tax reform. Schmidt was quoted as saying he wishes to move the avoidance “away from accusation and toward action” for global firms to be more transparent of their tax structures.

Schmidt acts as an advisor to Chancellor George Osborne, and at a meeting of...

Huawei snaffles major LTE deal with Wind

Huawei, the major Chinese operator, has been picked by Italian mobile operator Wind to lead the charge for a €1bn (£854.1m) network based on LTE.

As reported by Bloomberg, Wind expects to build the infrastructure, with Huawei and network engineering firm Sirti, for the network over five years. The move could be seen as something of a coup for both players, given that Wind is currently the third largest mobile operator in Italy.

Wind competes with Vodafone Italy and Telecom Italia, having been the...
