Nokia has added 5G and edge capabilities to its Worldwide IoT Network Grid (WING) managed service, which aims to help operators capture early IoT market share without investing in infrastructure.
The evolved form of the Nokia WING will allow operators to use new business models and foray into industries like critical public services, remote healthcare, connected cars, and real-time industrial monitoring and control.
With Nokia WING, the theory is operators will be able to leverage new business models and tap into industries such as connected cars, critical public services, and real-time industrial monitoring and control, as well as remote healthcare.
“We have now upgraded WING’s global architecture to 5G to further help operators to monetise IoT opportunities faster and cost-effectively in the 5G era,” said Ankur Bhan, head of Nokia’s WING business in a statement. “We are actively working with operators who have a global enterprise customer base and need to address their increasing needs for secure, low-latency IoT use cases across geographical borders.”
Last December, Nokia announced that it would introduce local 5G/private wireless LTE to industrial as well as government customers in Japan. For this purpose, the firm had established a partnership ecosystem with Hitachi Kokusai Electric for smart social infrastructure and smart cities with video solutions, NS Solutions for factory IoT, Internet Initiative Japan for Full MVNO, Equinix for multi-cloud and global data centres and Marubeni for global IoT.
In September, the Finnish firm had also collaborated with OMRON, and NTT DOCOMO to jointly conduct 5G field trials at their individual facilities to address some of the biggest challenges faced by manufacturers today. The testing conducted by NTT DOCOMO was aimed at catering to the increasing demand for wireless communications at manufacturing sites – mainly driven by the need for stable connectivity between IoT devices.
