(c)iStock.com/Danil Melekhin

With all the talk about the cloud, virtual networks, and ransomware these days, it's easy to forget there's a physical network underneath all these digital services that needs security too. It's the physicality of the fibres and cables that take our data from point A to point B that makes them vulnerable in different ways than what you'd typically envision with a hacker attack.

For example, in the San Francisco area last year there were 16 known attacks where the fibre optic...

Proof that online video doesn’t mean the death of TV

Online video.  It’s the death of TV, or so I’ve been told.  There’s only one problem though…I really love my TV.  And so do a lot of other people it seems.

A recent analysis of two of the largest over-the-top (OTT) video providers in the U.S. highlights this fact, and suggests that the days of the TV as the centerpiece of the living room are far from over.

Business does mix with pleasure: Social media goes corporate

So who hasn't checked Facebook at work, even once? No hands? Didn't think so.

To be fair, maybe you can count the number of times on one hand – and no one's judging you here, I've done it too. That's because social media has become so integrated into our personal lives, so quickly, that it has followed us to work like a stray dog – one we love so much that we don't have the heart to send away. Cycle Slips: Not all coherent technology is created equal

The early success of Ciena’s coherent optical technology, including strong customer adoption worldwide, has motivated many optical systems vendors to bring to market their own coherent solutions to provide a path for optical transport speeds of 100G, 400G and even 1Tbps.

However, now that the entire optical vendor market is scampering to implement this key technology, a challenge has...

Ciena's top 5 Things from June

For many, June signifies the beginning of summer (at least for those of us in the northern hemisphere), a time when vacation season and a lack of big industry events combine to create a bit of a lull in the industry news cycle.  That definitely wasn't the case for Ciena last month, as June produced a bevvy of news items for the company that ranged from new product introductions to Tier 1 customer news to the introduction of something called "coherent cycle slips."

So we start off the month of July by...
