Carrier bloatware can now be pushed post-sale

Bloatware is the controversial act of installing all those extra apps which wouldn't have shipped with the device under normal circumstances without third-party involvement. Despite many trying to get carrier bloatware banned, a new service is about to make the often-criticised practice much worse... 

'Ignite' by mobile solutions provider Digital Turbine will allow carriers to not just pre-load apps before use; but even after the device has been reached your pocket. At any point a carrier can push apps onto the device and it won't even require the permission of the user. This is something which is legal (despite the fact it shouldn't be.)

South Korea has led the way in this area and outright banned the use of bloatware on mobile devices. The software is invasive and often can't be uninstalled which takes up device storage to further annoy customers. Digital Turbine says that Ignite will help its clients to ship devices quickly without having to wait for the authorisation of apps before launch; as the service allows for carriers to deliver those apps over-the-air once they’re ready to go. 

Carriers which Digital Turbine boast are among their customers include Verizon and T-Mobile, so it wouldn't be a surprise to see these two post-load apps in the future. AT&T is probably the most notorious network for bloatware at the moment; so it's a surprise to see no mention of their interest yet. 

It's a questionable practice, but one which allows app developers and content publishers to push their apps and content to large install-bases at the press of a button. It wouldn't be as bad if the apps were at least able to be uninstalled, but the current method acts more like malware and should be stamped-out as such. 

A better solution would be to allow users to uninstall the apps and use analytics to see what is working and what isn't to ensure customers want the apps, they are the best they can possibly be, and that they add true value wherever they are deployed. 

But please, carriers, for both our sake just let bloatware die...
